4 Pantry Solutions for Toothache Relief While You Wait for the Dentist

August 4, 2025

Man experiencing a severe toothache

If you have just gotten off the phone with your emergency dentist about your toothache, you may be looking forward to your appointment. You will be able to get the relief you deserve pretty soon, but is there anything you can do about it right now? Thankfully, there may be some helpful things in your pantry that can reduce the severe discomfort you might be in right now. Keep reading to learn four items that might be useful.

1.)   Make Some Salt Water

The salt you have in your spice drawer might be able to be used for more than just seasoning! Combining it with some warm water can help act as a natural disinfectant. Rinsing it in your mouth can loosen any stuck morsels of food while reducing inflammation and helping heal any oral injuries you have. All you have to do is mix a half teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and use it as a mouthwash.

2.)  Use A Cold Compress

Another great way to reduce your toothache is with a cold pack. Pressing one against your cheek can help lessen your discomfort by numbing the area and reducing blood flow. If you don’t have one handy, then you can make your own by filling a plastic baggie with ice and wrapping it in a cloth. Apply it for 15-minute intervals, and it should bring you some relief.

3.)  Garlic

While you may use this ingredient to bring some delectable flavor to your meals, it can be helpful in managing your dental discomfort. Garlic has been recognized for its medicinal properties for thousands of years, as it helps kill harmful bacteria. To use this natural pain reliever, you can either crush a clove into a paste and put it on your affected tooth or chew on a fresh clove slowly.

4.)  Vanilla Extract

If you have some vanilla extract lying around, then you may be able to use that as well! It contains alcohol, which can help numb the pain, and it’s an antioxidant, so it may even be helpful in your healing. A caveat is that you have to ensure you are using real vanilla instead of imitation vanilla. When you double-check, you can put a small amount on your finger (or a cotton ball) and apply it to your tooth.

Keep in mind that these home remedies may help you in the meantime, but it’s still important to visit your dentist. They can help give you the lasting relief that you deserve, but hopefully one of these works out for you while you wait for your appointment!
