Summer vacation is meant to be a time of rest, fun, and adventure—but emergencies can strike at the worst times! Whether it’s a cracked tooth from biting into something hard, a sudden toothache while hiking, or a dislodged filling at the beach, knowing how to handle the situation can make a big difference in your comfort and outcome. Here are some essential tips to help you navigate a dental emergency while traveling this summer.
1. Calmly Assess the Situation
The first step is to remain calm. Not every dental issue is an immediate emergency, so take a moment to evaluate the severity. For example, minor sensitivity or a chipped tooth without pain can often wait until you return home. However, intense pain, swelling, bleeding, or a knocked-out tooth or dental restoration usually requires prompt attention.
2. Pack a Small Dental Emergency Kit
Before you leave for your trip, consider packing a small kit with dental essentials. Items like over-the-counter pain relievers, dental wax, a small mirror, gauze, and a small plastic container (for when teeth are knocked out) are all incredibly useful. You should also include a card with your dentist’s contact information—in case you need to give them a call!
3. Know How to Identify a Dental Emergency
Dental emergencies come in all shapes and sizes, but knowing which symptoms require immediate attention can save you time and trouble. Here are some examples of true dental emergencies:
- A knocked-out tooth
- A cracked or broken tooth causing pain
- A severe toothache or swelling, which may indicate an infection
- A lost crown or dental filling that has exposed sensitive tooth structure
- A soft tissue injury that will not stop bleeding
4. Quickly Find a Local Dentist
If the emergency can’t wait, try to locate a local dental office, using your smartphone or an available computer. If you’re staying at a hotel or resort, the staff should be able to recommend a local dentist or at least point you in the direction of one. Calling ahead of going in can help to ensure that you’re seen quickly and able to get the relief you need.
5. Use Temporary Solutions for Relief
While you’re waiting to see a dentist, you can do several things to ease your discomfort; just remember that none of these remedies are suitable alternatives to professional dental treatment! That said, here are some temporary relief tips:
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to reduce inflammation.
- Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
- Avoid chewing on the side of your mouth with the injury.
- Over-the-counter pain relievers can be used for throbbing dental pain.
Keep in mind that one of the best tips is prevention; taking steps to avoid dental issues in the first place, especially while on vacation, is a wise move. This means packing—and using—your toothbrush, as well as scheduling a routine checkup before you leave; catching small problems early can prevent emergency situations later!
