Dentures are the tried-and-true solution for tooth loss because they can restore your smile’s appearance and function with a single prosthetic. However, your jawbone starts thinning once teeth go missing, meaning your new teeth can eventually become destabilized or dislodged.

Dr. Cannady and the rest of our team can provide a more reliable, longer-lasting solution for tooth loss with implant dentures. Continue reading to learn more about this popular procedure, and please feel free to contact us to schedule an appointment.

What Are Implant Dentures?

Implant dentures combine the convenience and versatility of dentures with the longevity and resilience of dental implants. This treatment involves surgically placing anywhere from 2 to 8 biocompatible posts into your jaw that eventually fuse with the bone to become a more permanent part of your mouth. Then, our team can provide a specially designed set of dentures to attach to them.

There are two types of implant dentures, and our team is happy to provide an appropriate recommendation once we’ve examined your condition and have discussed your smile goals.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

This option involves providing a one-of-a-kind set of dentures that aren’t intended to be removed once they’re anchored to your implants, except by a qualified professional for repairs or replacement if needed.

Removable Implant Dentures

These ball-retained or bar-retained dentures snap onto your implants and can be removed twice daily for more thorough cleanings. This option often requires fewer posts in your jawbone, which can be ideal for patients with thinner jawbones.

The Implant Denture Process

Dr. Cannady has the expertise and state-of-the-art equipment to place and restore your implant dentures in the office. However, you must schedule a consultation before proceeding so our team can determine that your gums and jawbone are sufficiently strong and that you’re healthy enough to successfully undergo oral surgery.

Before beginning your procedure, we will numb your mouth with a local anesthetic and/or offer sedation, such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or oral conscious medication, to help you feel calm and comfortable. Then, we’ll create openings in your gums to carefully place the required number of implants.

It can take 3 to 6+ months to recover, as your mouth must generate enough new bone growth to fuse with your biocompatible implants. Once you’ve mended sufficiently, we can make impressions of your mouth that are sent to a dental laboratory to design your dentures.

We’ll contact you for a final fitting once your prosthetics arrive to ensure they fit and function as intended before sending you home with a beautifully rebuilt smile!

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

Although this is an incredibly effective solution for tooth loss, that doesn’t mean it’s the best way to meet everyone’s unique needs. Our team must examine your mouth and treat any pre-existing concerns, such as tooth decay or gum disease, that might interfere.

We’ll also measure your jawbone density to verify it’s thick enough to support your new teeth. In some cases, an additional bone graft procedure is required to bulk it up sufficiently.

Then, you must maintain a consistent at-home dental hygiene routine that includes brushing and flossing twice daily to prevent implant failure.

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

There are several advantages of attaching your dentures to dental implants, including:

  • Boosted confidence. Your restoration is carefully customized to look lifelike so you can feel confident in your appearance.
  • Improved bite force. Dental implants are the only replacement teeth that can return up to 80% or more of your original chewing power so you can enjoy a wider variety of wholesome meals to support your oral and overall health.
  • Long-lasting materials. Your new teeth can remain in great shape for 15+ years if cared for correctly.
  • Preserve your jawbone. This treatment prevents the jawbone degeneration that typically occurs after tooth loss, which can help support your facial structure.
  • Look younger. Protecting your jawbone helps avoid changes to your visage, like facial wrinkles, that can occur as the foundation of your mouth starts to think.
